There’s a story in the Bible about Moses having a conversation with God in the wilderness. God has tasked Moses with returning to Egypt to free Moses’ people from slavery, and Moses is worried about his credibility to complete such a task. He wants to be able to show the people in Egypt that God has sent him, and asks, “If I come to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” God then gives Moses God’s name, “I am who I am” (Exodus 3:13-14 NRSV).
This name for God, “I am,” is used throughout the Bible to describe the God who is faithfully present throughout the world. This understanding helps those of us who are Christians find hope in a world where hope can be hard to find. The #iamhere campaign gives us the opportunity to show the community and remind ourselves that God is always with us.
