Herndon, Virginia is a diverse community in which fellows can engage in various ways. Located only 20 miles outside Washington, D.C. and neighboring Dulles International Airport, this gateway to the nation’s capital has a vast array of vocational opportunities in information technology, business, finance, non-profits, Christian ministry and several other fields of interest. Herndon is a historic community with a younger population; 62% of the population was younger than 40 in 2014. In addition, Herndon has a diverse ethnic population, with substantial Latino/a, South Asian and Southeast Asian populations in particular. Herndon is also a community in transition; in the coming years, Washington D.C.'s Metro system will extend all the way to Dulles Airport, bringing a host of new faces and opportunities to this growing area.
The Dulles Corridor, the area along the border between Loudoun and Fairfax Counties in Northern Virginia, has been described as one of the “top technology corridors in the nation” by the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce. This technology center, which includes Herndon and the neighboring towns of Reston and parts of Fairfax, was labeled the “Silicon Valley of the East” in 2011 by The Atlantic magazine.
