Rev. Tom Berlin - Senior Pastor

Rev. Tom Berlin

Senior Pastor

Rev. Tom Berlin is the Senior Pastor of Floris United Methodist Church. Tom was raised in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley and has lived in Virginia most of his life. He attended Virginia Tech and received a BS in Business from Virginia Tech with a major in Public Administration. His Master’s of Divinity is from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He is married to Karen and they have four daughters.

Tom began working at Floris in 1997. As Lead Pastor of the Church, Tom’s main responsibilities are to provide spiritual leadership to the congregation and staff of Floris United Methodist Church. He leads worship, preaches, shares the sacraments and enjoys teaching. Tom works with the Church Council to discern and cast the vision for the church and leads the staff to create ministry strategies.

• First job: Tom’s first job was delivering papers for the Winchester Evening Star.
• Tom’s idea of a perfect day: The beach. Any beach. Any time.

Pam Piester - Executive Director

Pam Piester

Executive Director

Pam Piester is the Executive Director at Floris United Methodist Church. Pam grew up in Northern Virginia, but left the area to attend college in Colorado. She returned to the Northern Virginia area one year after graduation and considers herself at home in this area. She has a BA in Political Science from the University of Colorado, in Boulder, Colorado, and has completed post-graduate coursework in accounting, economics, and management.

Pam is married to Matt and has three beautiful children and one very cute dog named Milby.

Pam began working at Floris UMC in May 2008. Under the strategic guidance of the Senior Pastor, Pam’s primary responsibility as the Executive Director of Floris is to manage all administrative and operational aspects of the church, including all programmatic ministry areas. Her job is to relieve the Senior Pastor of the administrative and operational duties associated with the day-to-day management of a large church so that the Senior Pastor can focus on casting the strategic vision for the church, as well as the pastoral duties of preaching, teaching, ministering to and growing the congregation.

• Favorite Bible verse: Isaiah 40:28-31
• First job: Movie theater usher
• Pam’s idea of a perfect day: Pam loves to spend a Saturday watching all three of her children playing their favorite sport. Actually getting to see three games in one day is a real treat, especially if it’s basketball.
• Pam enjoys vacations and sporting activities with her family, and reading in her private time.

Rev. Barbara Miner - Associate Pastor, Director of Worship

Rev. Barbara Miner

Associate Pastor, Director of Worship

Rev. Barbara Miner is an Associate Pastor, Director of Worship at Floris United Methodist Church. Barbara spent her childhood years in Ohio. She attended school in Birmingham, Alabama so she could dance with a local ballet company and complete her degree in Christian Education and Fine Arts. After graduation, she met and married her husband, Marty, and spent the next few years as a military spouse. She and Marty have three grown children.

Barbara has served as a pastor at Floris UMC since 2006. As Director of Worship, Barbara’s main responsibilities are to offer vital, God-honoring worship in a variety of styles for the congregation. She also oversees Congregational Care Ministries and takes pleasure in ensuring that compassionate, spirit-filled care is offered to those in crisis or times of difficulty. She also enjoys preaching and teaching and considers it a privilege to be a pastor here at FUMC.

• Favorite Bible verse: Isaiah 43:1-3
• First job: Barbara’s first job was wrapping candy at a local candy factory in her hometown.
• Barbara’s idea of a perfect day: Spending time with family, playing games, preferably on or near the water.

Rev. Tim Ward - Associate Pastor, Director of Grow Ministries

Rev. Tim Ward

Associate Pastor, Director of Grow Ministries

Tim Ward was born in Culpeper, Va. and received his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia. After college he spent two years working as an account executive in the corporate world while serving as a volunteer in youth ministry at The Falls Church, an historic parish in Falls Church, Va. In 2003 Tim joined the staff as the middle school director at The Falls Church. In 2005 Tim married his wife Susan.

Tim joined the staff of Floris United Methodist Church in the fall of 2006 as the Youth Director. Soon thereafter, Tim and Susan had their first son, Jackson, in February of 2007. In the summer of 2008 Tim began working on his MDIV degree at Wesley Theological Seminary. In 2009 Tim and Susan expanded their family with the birth of twins Nathan and Sarah.

Currently Tim serves as one of the associate pastors at Floris UMC. His focus is on the area of discipleship to children, students, and adults.

Jake McGlothin - Director of Serve Ministries

Jake McGlothin

Director of Serve Ministries

Jake McGlothin is the Director of Serve Ministries at Floris United Methodist Church. Jake is from New Orleans, La. and has a BA in History from Louisiana Tech University. He is currently a part-time student at Wesley Theological Seminary and trains regularly in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Jake began working at Floris in April 2010. He is responsible for leading the church’s service and outreach programs and engaging Floris members in transforming the community and the world.

• Favorite Bible verse: Isaiah 58.
• First job: Pizza delivery.
• Jake’s idea of a perfect day: Yoga, jiu-jitsu, dinner, and movie with his wife.

Cynthia Lopynski - Director of Communications

Cynthia Lopynski

Director of Communications

Cynthia Lopynski is Director of Communications at Floris United Methodist Church. Cynthia grew up in Severna Park, Md. (near Annapolis). She ended up in Herndon, Va. by way of James Madison University and a job right out of college with AT&T.

Cynthia has a BS in Management Information Systems from JMU and her desire to serve the church with excellence led her to take coursework at Wesley Theological Seminary to become a certified lay professional in 2005. Cynthia has been part of the Floris UMC family since 1991 and may be the only person who can claim to have walked to all three churches. She met her husband Jerry, an Arlington native, at AT&T. They have two wonderful daughters and one very large cat named Archimedes.

Cynthia began working at Floris in 1999. As the Director of Connections she is responsible for Communications and for the Connections Ministry. She is responsible for executing the strategic vision of the church by ensuring that focus areas of the church (Worship, Small Groups and Service) draw first-time guests into the life of the church so that they might worship regularly, grow intentionally, and serve faithfully, and to encourage regular worshipping attendees to move into grow and serve opportunities. Cynthia partners with the Directors of Worship, Grow, and Serve to identify strategic opportunities to invite the local community to Floris UMC.

• Favorite Bible verse: Proverbs 3:5-6
• First job: Cynthia’s first job was at Burger King (Her favorite part of the job was hosting the kid’s birthday parties).
• Cynthia’s idea of a perfect day: Watching a lacrosse game followed by a sunset sail on the Chesapeake Bay and a crab feast!
